Listen

A different tone
on another note
striking a chord
the music of the spheres

The piper at the gates of dawn – now that one gets me – evocative – The Wind in the Willows and a Pink Floyd track – and in a Led Zeppelin song
Language is song, it makes me wonder what tune some people are humming in their heads –
The most beautiful languages are music to my ears – and each language has it’s own cadence it’s own melody – there is a rhythm to the consonants and a repetition in the favoured vowels.

This makes song and music and dance in each language completely different.
The instruments each culture develops are unique and marvelous – or very, very strange

We even fight our wars with music, the horn, the drums, the trumpets, the bagpipes, the clicking of spears on shields – sound as weapon of destruction.
Sound as lullaby for a child, we teach our children songs, we sing to them even before they are born.
We play them music through the womb to their developing ears.
We play music at death, the funeral dirge, the favourite songs, that special melody.
We have unique music for marriages and birthdays all over the world.
And we have special music to mark the seasons and our great historical events.
Music is everywhere
– and I haven’t even started on the music industry, where it turns from art into shit very quickly through the ballads of singer songwriters to the jingles of commercialism.

We all know which is better – that’s really easy
Some music has heart and soul, some has none

Good music carries emotion like a wave before it and we can all feel it – music helps words enter the soul – so we set words to music to stir the soul.

We use music to program the mind – the meditation – the hypnosis tape – the propaganda march – the nursery rhyme for a child.
and the hard hammering of advertising
We are surrounded by that too – all the time – so much so we are not even aware of it anymore – it has become so much noise – ugly noise.

It almost drowns out the underlying hum of our planet, the whisper of the wind, the bird at dawn.
Listen.
Everywhere is the sound of nature, the crickets in the heat of the day, the lone call of a loon in the fog of deep winter, the owl haunting the night.

Is life music?  We use musical phrasing – it sits deep in our language – or is life a dream – do we hear life more than we see life, as we cannot close our ears and we hear even in our sleep.
So we always hear – even in our dreams.

I love the silence – when I can find it – as there isn’t really any unless you seek it out.
When we go into silence we listen to the world – to everything around us.
Listen to this – if you can – this endless undulating silent whispering all around us – not made up of the hard and tinny noise of the commercial – which is an assault on us at the deepest level.

But listen to the deep silence inside – and the song of the world all around us
Here you can finally relax.
This is where music truly lies.
